Who exactly was the mother of John Paul Jones? It has been reported that the father of John Paul Jones was named John Paul (1704-1767) and the mother was named Jean or Jeanne MacDuff. However, looking through birth and marriage records for that period in Scotland, I have found at least six women named that or something similar born from 1704 to 1726, all of whom were married to a man named John Paul and all of whom are in the age range where they could be the mother of John Paul Jones. Their names were Jeanne MacDuff, Jeanne McDuff, Jeane McDuff or Jean Duff. They all married John Paul between 1726 and 1742. None of them can be excluded as the mother. Paul is not a common last name in Scotland and it seems difficult to believe that it was a coincidence that so many women with those names were all married to a man named John Paul. It is also elsewhere reported that the mother of John Paul Jones was named Jean Temple or Jean Sample.

John Paul JONES [Parents] 1 was born on 6 Jul 1747 in Arbigland Estate, Kirkbean, Scotland. He died on 18 Jul 1792 in Paris, France. He was buried on 26 Jan 1913 in Us Naval Academy, Anapolis, Maryland. He married Aimee Adele TELISON before 1777.
After several successful years as a merchant skipper in the West Indies trade, John Paul emigrated to the British colonies in North America and there added "Jones" to his name. He fought in the American Revolutionary War, capturing or sinking many British Ships. He is best known for saying "we have not yet begun to fight" when his own ship was in fact sinking. He proceeded to board the enemy ship and capture it, while his own ship, the "Bon Homme Richard", sank. He is considered to be the founder of the United States Navy and is buried at the US Naval Academy in Annapolis.

I do not know which Samuel Sloan III was the grandson of the railroad tycoon, so I have added both of them and hope to learn the answer later. This death is not recorded in the Social Security Death Index, but I believe that this is the man I met in 1969.

SLOAN, SAMUEL III,SLOAN-Samuel III, 82. A former member and Governor of the New York Stock Exchange, and former Vice President and Director of Hayden, Stone, Inc. died on December 16, 2001 at Jupiter, FL. During World War II, Mr. Sloan was an aircraft commander of a B-24 lead crew in Italy and served 35 missions. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with Three Oak Leaf Clusters. Born in New York, he attended the Buckley School and later Groton School and Cornell University. Mr. Sloan was the husband of the late Marion Baker Sloan, father of Samuel Sloan, Jr., Ellen V. Sloan and Marion B. Sloan; stepfather of Cynthia T. Powers, the late Jay D. Titus and Dorothy D. McFeeters; grandfather of Samuel Colt Sloan and great grandfather of Samuel Colton Sloan. A Funeral Service will be held, 10AM, January 11, 2002 at St. Georges-by-the-River, Rumson, NJ, followed by interment at Fairview Cemetery, Middletown, NJ.
